A whole 250 words written sitting in a Starbucks after lunch. I'm annoyed that I not only really like this Starbucks coffee (Ethiopia Sidamo), but am comfortable with the earth-toned, track-lit motif and even like the soundtrack. A barista wandered over to point out that there was an outlet by my table so I could plug in the laptop. I'd like to be smugly liberal and be over in the apparently independent coffee shop that's nearby, but not only are they less comfortable to camp out in, they're more expensive.

It's good to get even a little bit accomplished. But I hate being so perfectly in this demographic.

Too bad there isn't a Chipotle (http://www.chipotle.com/) near you. They just opened up a gourmet burrito eatery in the Cherry Orchard plaza in Sunnyvale. Kind of sad they took a cherry orchard, plopped a Borders, Starbucks, Pasta Pomodoro, PF Changs (which you can't get in without reservations or an hour wait -- on a Thursday!).. But the burritos are tasty.

Indeed, I'd like to try a Chipotle sometime. There are a few taquiera-type places out here now, at least, though--although the only one that's really close to where I work is in a mall food court.

There's a PF Chang's in Winter Park and it has tremendous waits, too. That appears to be endemic to the chain. They are pretty good, though. (I recently learned that the Chang of the restaurant is the son of the woman who founded the Mandarin in San Francisco.)

Sucks, doesn't it?

I'm more of a Barnie's (http://www.barnies.com) person than a Starbuck's person; I tend to think Starbuck's is overrated, although they are starting to pop up all over Jacksonville as of late. Most of the Barnie's are still in the malls.

If you want a really alternative coffee house, visit Fuel Coffeehouse in Jax's Five Points district. Pretty cool decor and reading materials, but (as you noted with your other choice) a bit more expensive than the "corporate" shops.

KFM!

I like Barnie's coffee more, too, but I don't think any of the Barnie's around here really have sitting areas like the one in Celebration does.

As for Fuel Coffeehouse, maybe I'll visit it someday, but it'd be a bit far for a lunch break. :)

On Starbucks...

Find what works best for you. Period.

I don't care too much for Starbucks. (I've stopped drinking coffee.) But I should find myself a good, quiet spot to sit, write, and peoplewatch...
