I liked the Kumquat site, and that name for a fruit just amuses me anyhow, so I might be a bit biased. There's no only thing I could suggest---and that'd be rounded table edges. Basically, you make the main table the center piece of nine seperate tables in a kind of rectangle.
You can find the tutorial on doing that here (http://www.htmlgoodies.com/tutors/roundcorners.html) and my crappy attempt at it there (http://www.btinternet.com/~v.r.danbury/karim/index.html). The latter was for an HTML assignment. My excuse is, that half way through building it, I found that the person grading it doesn't actually know any HTML, so I only had to hit certain check-points, like, using tables, annotating, etc.
I would've just fiddled with your Kumquat code (I say code because I don't want to say HTML! again), and added the rounded borders to it myself as a nice surprise, but I'm feeling really crappy. If you're a bit dubious about it, I'll try to find some time when I'm not lilting, to demonstrate and do it for you.

You'll love it, it'll be great.
