I think the biggest turn off for MMORPG's for me has remained constant throughout. I tried Ultima Online, but after realising that I spent my only spare time chopping down wood, I started to re-think what I was looking for in the world of massively multiplayer online role-playing crap. It certainly wasn't a part time job I had to pay to do.
The next thing I tried was Anarchy Online. Past the bugs and horrendous performance issues, it was a really good world. It had a fundamental problem, though, which ran to the roots. It's whole design didn't encourage RP or any kind of team play. So, basically, you had hundreds, potentially thousands of people running around a world pretty much playing a collective single player game. I think the only time anyone actually said "hi tehre!" was when I made a female character and had her run around in a very racy bikini, matching high heels and very big gun.
And, what's the purpose of an online game if it isn't RP or team play?! In the case of FurryMuck, I dare not speculate. :)
