During storms like the one we just had, all the passes over from Tahoe are 'chains required'. When you get to Barstow, call Caltrans and look for road advisories up on the Sierras. If they're nasty (quite possible), stay the course and come down the pass from Mojave into Bakersfield, and take I5 up to 152 and over into Gilroy, and up into San Jose.
That is, of course, unless you have chains and like snow-driving. Some do. :)
