I get lots of odd recruiter spam. This one is (at least from all appearances) quite real--I talked with her over the phone and know who she's recruiting for with respect to this specific position and why she's trying to float me specifically for it. Her client wants someone who's a web coder trying to move into technical writing. I'd like to think this makes me an obvious candidate, although I know I'm not the one who actually has to be convinced of it. :)
The idea that employers can't hire candidates presented by the recruiter without going through the recruiter is pretty common and fairly reasonable, but I'd be leary of any agent asking to go farther than that.
