It's occurring to me that I haven't been out finding good restaurants like I should be.

Now, you'd think this wouldn't be that difficult. "It's the San Francisco Bay Area, for God's sake," you may say. (Go on, say it.) "You found good restaurants around Tampa Bay, and it couldn't possibly compare."

In one sense, that's obviously true. Find a list of the best restaurants in America, past and present, and you'll be sure to find a few names from around the greater SF Bay area: Chez Panisse. The French Laundry. The Zuni Cafe. Tra Vigne. Jardiniere. The Mandarin. You won't find restaurants like that in my old stomping grounds.

But the flip side of that is that the median restaurant in Tampa Bay may actually be higher than here. You may not be able to find "four diamond" places but you can almost trip over "three diamond" ones, from Tampa's fine dining places like Profusion, Ashley Street Grille and Blue Gardenia to Disney restaurants like Artist Point, Flying Fish and the California Grill. And the Tampa-Orlando region is virtually the home of the "casual chain restaurant": notable area escapees include Outback Steakhouse, Olive Garden and Red Lobster (along with Hooters, but we don't talk about them very much). Sadly, the area's best chains like Hops and the "damn, this is owned by who and it's this good?" Bahama Breeze aren't out here. (Breeze is Darden's third chain after Olive Garden and Red Lobster.)

I have a more prosaic problem, too: I don't have time to go out and find restaurants on weekday nights given my work hours. (This problem is doubly annoying because I don't have time to cook on weekday nights.) I do some scouting at lunch, but I have an aversion to paying much then; a $10 dinner doesn't seem expensive, but a $7 lunch does.

Today I started making a list of restaurants I'd like to bumble my way toward, and in fact hit one of them, "Yung Le's Fusion" in San José--which turns out to be reminiscent of a surprisingly good restaurant back in Florida called Simply Thai. They're both modest restaurants in strip malls with great Asian food in the mostly-under-$10 range. The similarities end there, though--Yung Le's isn't Thai, it's pan-Asian, with Thai, Malaysian and Vietnamese influences, and it's definitely not simple. Yung Le is apparently a well-known chef in the area who'd been at a few other restaurants (the New Bamboo, which I'd never heard of, and the Left Bank in Menlo Park, which I have heard of) before setting out on her own late last year.

I'm curious--if you're in this area, or were in this area, and think there's some particularly amazing place I need to try, I'd be interested in hearing about it. Particularly the fine dining places--places where creativity, complexity and presentation count. (This isn't code for "deathly expensive"; some of the best fine restaurants I've been to have been quite affordable.)

Yes, I'm fond of Hops and Panera Bread. And Brew Moon up in Philadelphia was way good. (though they changed their name in past years)

For around here, well, there was this great Thai restaurant on Lawrence & Prospect, but that area of the mall has been down for renovations for a long while and I'm not sure where they've moved. I'm fond of Potsticker King but it's straight-up Chinese food in a hole-in-the-wall. (Ask Revar about them, Revar likes their Mongolian beef, but Tugrik prefers a different Chinese restaurant in the area)

Take me along sometimes when you go restaurant hopping, I'd like to learn more about the restaurants in the area too. ('gryn)

I'll see if I can get [livejournal.com profile] elflet's attention on this thread. In the meanwhile, L'Amie Donia in Palo Alto is a don't miss. Sundance Mining Co, also in PA, very good.

Many of my faves have closed or changed beyond recognition (goodbye, 3 Fish in Menlo Park, Mackie's in PA). Zucca in Mountain View has provided many pleasing moments.

I think the biggest thing I've notcied out here are the median restaurants cost the same as the four star and most of the Disney restaurants did back in Florida. At least that's how it felt when I was eating out a whole lot. As far as places you might like in this area, hopefully this is a good start:

Caio Bella! - An Italian place I really like, great food and really fun to boot. My top recommendation for this list. If you go make reservations. (9217 Hwy 9, Ben Lomond, 831-336-9221)

The Stinking Rose (http://thestinkingrose.com/) - Italian. Garlic. Lots of it. Yummy. Up in SF.

Fontana's - More Italian. A bit pricy if you ask me, but pretty good with a variety. Haven't been there in awhile tho. (408-725-0188, 20840 Stevens Creek Blvd., Cupertino)

House of Siam - Excellent Thai food and I really like their Thai iced teas. This is a favorite amongst friends of mine. (55 South Market St. 408-279-5668)

Amber India - I'm not the best judge of Indian food but I really like this place, and a couple friends of mine have said it's their favorite Indian restaurant in the area. (2290 W El Camino Real, Mountain View, 650-968-7511)

Ho Chow - Chinese restaurant up in the Warm Springs area of Fremont. May not be as authentic as some of SF's Chinatown places, but the food is amazingly good. Not all that pricy either. A favorite amongst friends of mine. Also worth of note is we've never needed reservations though they're good for larger groups. (47966 Warm Springs Blvd, Fremont, 510-657-0683)

Pretty much anything in Saratoga, I've only been to a couple of these places. (La Fondue, Plumed Horse) I still haven't been to the French place, Le Mutton Noir, but have heard nothing but good things about it. Be aware though that many of these places are in the "deathly expensive" range.

I'm not much of a steak person, but Hungry Hunter is a regional chain that a lot of my friends like, and I don't mind their non-steak dishes either, though it can get pricy at times.

Everyone has their own opinion on what the best sushi or dim sum place is.

There's also a German restaurant near downtown San Jose I haven't tried yet, but heard good things from a couple people, with an apropriate atmosphere to boot. Teske's Germania (http://www.teskes-germania.com/).

This is an "if you're near try it" place would Crepes a Go-Go in Berkeley. Hole in the wall place but really good stuff, definitely fits your creativity criteria, even if the presentation isn't too hot. On University near UCB.

If I think of more I'll post 'em.

Just thought of Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery in Campbell, in the Pruneyard. While I've been to Hops a total of two times so can't compare, this may fit that niche out here. Dunno. Not 'fine dining' or horribly expensive so it couldn't hurt to try, I think. :) (1875 S Bascom Ave, Campbell, 408-377-0707)

Last one for this evening, I swear!

Max's Opera Cafe in Palo Alto. There's other Max's about, usually good for a quick lunch or dinner, but the one in Palo Alto is the one to go to for more a more complex dining experience. The one there is upscale, the food is excellent, and they have a live pianist and the servers take time out to sing now and then in the evenings (thus the 'Opera Cafe' part.) A nice touch of atmosphere. Very enjoyable overall and not too pricey. (711 Stanford Shopping Center, Palo Alto, 650-323-6297)

I have to second the suggestion of House of Siam. Good Thai.
I also like Hungry Hunter, but I think it's price tag is a bit too steep.
