I have some unique insight into this, New England is most definately home for me, more specifically, New Hampshire Seacoast/Massachusetts North Shore. I lived there for seven years, moved to england for three, back home for three years. It was different, and not the same, but it was still HOME. That was the first time, after that I was away for six years, and then back. It was still home. VERY different, but home.
The point of the saying is that you can never return to sameness. Life is constantly changing, even with the constants. (your mother's neighborhood, or MY Grandmother's) Home is where your heart lives. If you do decide that your heart has moved, going back to the old place it lived will feel hallow, empty. Like a vague memory that can't quite be remembered.
Where is your heart? (I have more insights to this I'm willing to discuss online or in person if you wish.)
