I'm going on an arguably needed vacation, Saturday through Wednesday, meeting my mother in San Diego. (Actually, I leave godawful early Saturday morning, and get back even godawful earlier Thursday morning and go into work!)

If anyone has any suggestions for the trip, I'm all ears. I don't know much about the area. I have vague ideas for restaurants, because, well, that's what I do, and of course I know about the San Diego Zoo. The only thing "set" is a reservation at Arterra on Saturday night, and I have an idea of going to Bali Hai for brunch on Sunday. (Bizarrely, San Diego is apparently famous for great champagne brunch places.) And, Tuesday or Wednesday, we'll probably go to Tijuana, and maybe get to a gourmet Mexican restaurant that's actually (gasp) in Mexico.

I found the surf museum (http://www.surfmuseum.org/) at Oceanside interesting, just for the oddity that such a thing existed. They do a good job of taking a bunch of material artifacts and turning them into a coherent historical story. Not sure whether it'd be more or less interesting for someone who actually knew anything about the topic....

A gourmet restaurant... in Tijuana?

There's a few pretty respected restaurants in Tijuana, like Cien Años and La Diferencia. Most of the better ones aren't within walking distance of the border, althouh I've gathered that even there, there's some *good* restaurants, even if they're not necessarily gourmet, scattered throughout all the bars.

Hey, hope this isn't too late, but I'm down in the San Diego area, so if you need a ride, I should be around all Saturday, and about half of sunday. Sadly, I don't know of any particularly good places, though I could probably find one by asking around.

Sadly, I don't know a whole lot to do beyond that. The only touristy thing I have thought about in my own town here is the Midway and the boat that they filmed Master and Commander on right next to each other, if that is your cup of tea. Beyond that, San Diego seems to be about shopping and spending money.

Miguel's Cocina on Coronado is quite good, but if you don't want to endure the island poshness you should go to Cafe Coyote in Old Town. Both have been rated the best Mexican food in San Diego County. If you like fish tacos, try the original Rubio's in Pacific Beach--I swear the food is better there than at the franchises.

Of course you know about the Zoo, but have you ever been to the San Diego Wild Animal Park? If you can fit both in, great; if you can only fit one in and you've been to the Zoo, definitely don't miss the WAP.

Visit every museum in Balboa Park.

Go to Ocean Beach and eat New York style pizza. Walk south along Sunset Cliffs, but come back before the sunset. Visit the tidepools. Walk out on the OB pier. Rent a rod and buy some bait. Watch other people catch fish, watch the sunset, watch Sea World's fireworks (to the north), watch sea gulls and pelicans eat your useless bait. Visit a head shop called The Black.

Drive up the mountain to Julian just to get some famous apple pie.

Rent a sailboat on Mission Bay.

Let me know how Bali Hai is. I've never gone.
