In a setting that is an alternate version of feudal Japan, with races of anthropomorphic animals instead of humans but no other (overt) magic and myth, what would it mean for a fox-person to be a kitsune?

Maybe they're multi-tailed mutants, genetic sports that everyone mocks, so they've had to become tricksy, seductive and manipulative just to get people to take them seriously and give them a little respect. -_-
